What's it about?
Audio files need an alternative in the form of text. Silent videos can provide an alternative in the form of a text description of the content or an audio file.
How to
Depending on your situation, you can implement one of the following options to meet the criterion. For a deeper dive, please refer to the linked WCAG techniques.
Provide a text alternative for audio content
Every audio file on a website requires a text alternative that conveys the content of the audio.
This text is often a transcript of what is spoken. If there are multiple speakers, the transcript must also include the speakers’ names.
Any sounds that are important for understanding must also be included in the transcript.

Provide an alternative for silent video content
Silent videos can have an alternative in two ways:
-
Text-based video description: One option is to provide a text (in the language of the website) that describes the content of the video as thoroughly as possible. This includes describing the setting, actions, expressions, and more.
-
Audio-based video description: The second option is to provide the description as an audio file. This can be an optional audio track or an audio file placed near the video. The audio should be provided in a common format such as MP3.
